Running is the new dating app

I’ve seen many Reels, Shorts, and TikTok videos claiming that running clubs are a new way of dating.

More news reports about running clubs turning into dating scenes.

At first, I didn’t understand the appeal of running. I thought most runners were skinny, which was the opposite of what I wanted to be. Running on a treadmill was boring, and outdoor runs came with many discomforts, like the weather and heavy sweating. But I gave a few tries of running, and it quickly became one of my favorite activities, and here’s why.

Become more fit

Runners are not all skinny. Many marathoners are, but sprinters often have the best physiques. Many runners incorporate various exercises, including weightlifting. Running is one of the best ways to lose body fat. The various terrains for outdoor running also help improve body coordination and balance. Running became a great solution to my metabolism and recovery slowing down. I became leaner, and recovery felt faster with active recovery, though a 2024 study suggests it has no such effect.

Convenience

Some people buy the latest and fanciest running gear. I’m interested in getting them too, but I know that, in reality, all you need are regular workout clothes and proper running shoes as the minimum requirement. I mentioned ‘discomforts’ earlier, but they’re mostly just mental barriers that can hold you back. You don’t need a gym membership or extra equipment. This makes it really convenient—you can run anytime, even in the dark or the rain, though harsher conditions do require more preparation. Plus, you can explore local neighborhoods and even different cities or nature while traveling.

Goals and mental clarity

You may have heard of runner’s high. I’m not sure if I’ve experienced one, but I definitely feel a sense of achievement after running. Additionally, running offers many metrics to set goals around: pace, distance, elevation, cadence, heart rate, and more. Personally, I’m excited about these goals because, as a new runner, I’m seeing faster progress compared to weightlifting, where improvements have slowed over time.

The best part comes when you take a shower after a run. Has anyone ever preached the benefits of a cold shower? Your body temperature often stays high after running, leading to sweating even after a shower. A cold shower is a great solution—it cools your body down and leaves you feeling refreshed. If you’ve been curious about cold showers, running might be a great way to start!

Dating

Okay, I’ve talked about the well-known benefits of running. So where’s the dating part? Sorry to disappoint, but I haven’t joined a running club, so I don’t have any personal testimony for you. I don’t like the idea of coordinating with others, and I want to focus on improving my running for now. But I can see the appeal and understand how running clubs could easily turn into dating clubs.

You get fitter and feel more confident about yourself. Dopamine is released with the sense of achievement. And, oh, you’re surrounded by similarly attractive individuals? Can I make it any more obvious?
